The Great Lakes contain approximately 84% of North America's surface fresh water and about 21% of the world's supply of surface fresh water. As the world's largest freshwater system, they hold roughly 90% to 95% of the United States' surface fresh water. The system holds roughly 5,500 cubic miles of water. They provide drinking water for over 30 million people, representing 10% of the U.S. population and 30% of the Canadian population. Keep the Great Lakes Alive.
